Visby Race 16 - 19 july
Revival of the classic Visby Race
|
We are trying to revive the classic Visby Race, which firsty took place in 1908. Apart from the exciting and exacting conditions out at sea, the stopover in Visby was noted for the parties and the social life in the harbour. That’s something worth preserving! But we will also be making a contribution to the cultural life of the fantastic mediaeval town of Visby.
The yacht races for the Visby Trophy were the forerunner to Gotland Runt. In 1908 ten yachts took part in two classes, and the race back to Nynäshamn was highly dramatic in a westerly storm. Several boat suspended racing and ran for cover. The stormy conditions of the first race inhibited the development of the event, and nothing more came of it until 1923. From then the event continued until 1937. The race often attracted larger skerry cruisers, int. metre boats large ketches and yawls. For us sailors today the memory of boats such as Mariska with Ch. Mathisen, Ingun with Alarik Sundén Cullberg and Refanut with Jakob Wallenberg is truly awe-inspiring. There were usually two classes with a simple handicap system.
A couple of attempts have been made in recent times, 2005 for the 175-year jubilee of the KSSS and 2008 for the centenary celebrations of the Square Metre Rule, and now it is time to try again. |
