In 1912 the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) hosted the Olympic races in Nynäshamn 20-23 July where 20 yachts took part. Parallel with this they put on an international regatta for 120 yachts from several countries.
The Olympic classes were int. 12, 10, 8 and 6 metre according to the 6-year-old International Metre Rule. Each country could enter two boats in each class totaling 8 boats altogether. Sweden took part with seven boats, Finland with five, Norway and Russia with three each and Denmark and France with one boat each.
The International Regatta attracted 120 boats from the countries mentioned above, plus one German boat. The largest boat was the int. 15m yacht Sophie Elisabeth and the smallest four 22 sq. m. skerry cruisers.
The Olympic yacht races of 1912
The Olympic competitions in Nynäshamn were run between 20th and 22nd July with two races on the 20th and 21st and a re-run on the 22nd for the boats with the same point score. The wind was northerly and easterly on the first two days and not above seven knots, rising to a little above nine knots on the third day, thus giving the light-wind boats a clear advantage.
The points awarded to the three first boats in each class were 7 for a win, 3 for second place and 1 for third. This system resulted in four re-runs to determine the three medal winners.
International regatta.
The international regatta was run in the same light winds as the Olympic races but the start was one and a half hours later on a northerly course so as not to disturb the Olympic boats. On Monday 22 July racing was suspended during the re-runs of the Olympic races.
Island race to Sandhamn
On Tuesday 23 July the competitors sailed for Sandhamn to continue racing under the aegis of The Royal Stockholm Yacht Club. The first start was at the crack of dawn, 6 o’clock, and two hours later the final starting group left. Line honours were taken by the 15 metre Sophie Elisabeth who crossed the finishing line after 6 hours and 10 minutes.
